CGS Learning Enhancement Center
In order to meet individual training needs efficiently and effectively, CGS has established the Learning Enhancement Center as the hub of its occupational training programs. The CGS Learning Enhancement Center (LEC) is a state-of-the-art approach to improving basic academic skills essential for success in the 21st century workplace. Using a fully networked laboratory, CGS consumers will develop basic computer literary skills.
The CGS Learning Enhancement Center has installed the Aries Computer Literacy curriculum, as one-semester beginners level course. Its designed to bridge the gap for learners who may not have knowledge of information technology, but who need to become computer literate. It also provides a firm foundation for more advanced studies and serves as solid introduction to the word processing curriculum. Computer Basics is a 12-unit course, filled with dynamic, student-friendly lessons. Each unit contains interactive lessons, an informative summary, and a quiz. A separate glossary provides definitions of lesson-specific terms.
The course meets standards of the International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) standards and can be customized to meet the demands of CGS consumers. Instructional modules include:
- Introduction to the Computer
- History of Computers
- Safety
- Power Supply
- System Unit
- Basic Input/ Output Devices
- Introduction to the Operating System
- Windows 98-Windows 2000
- Windows NT
- Unix
- Mac OS
- Introduction to Networking
An On-Line Assessment System provides a central repository that lets instructors store and retrieve content objectives and student scores, facilitating formative and summative evaluations of student achievement.
Additional prescriptive learning software will tailor individual learning programs to areas of occupational interest. Basic academic skills are presented in terms of work-related tasks for a broad range of occupations. Since many CGS consumers have skills deficits, it will be critical to continue to upgrade their abilities to carry out job-related tasks by improving basic mathematics, reading and writing competencies.
