CGS Work Adjustment Training (WAT)
Retail Merchandising Program
The 195 day Retail Merchandising Training Program prepares trainees for competitive employment in department stores, specialty stores, discount stores and drug store chains.
Consumers receive floor instruction, supplemented by classroom training, in a simulated retail environment. Consumers rotate through various stations to gain proficiency all skills required for competitive retail positions. Training emphasizes a strong work ethic as well as specific competencies including:
- Customer Services Skills
- Selling techniques
- Knowledge of Stock and Inventory Control
- Ticketing/Tagging/Labeling
- Markdowns
- Cashiering
- Merchandising Display
- Gift Wrapping and Packaging and Bow-Making
The retail-merchandising program also offers a variety of internships so that the consumer can get hands-on experience and develop the professional skills and behaviors essential for success in the retail environment. Graduates have been successfully placed in the positions including sales associate, stock/inventory clerk, fitting room attendant, cashier/sales associate, gift wrapper and shipping receiving clerk.
Admission Requirements
- Minimum 4th grade level of reading and math
- Adequate communication skills
- Adequate manual dexterity
- Adequate physical endurance for standing, bending and lifting
- A willingness to conform with retail work hours, including weekend, evening and holiday hours
- Pleasant presentation
- A willingness to do service work
- Honesty a must!
